Q1: Can I paint or coat the hub mounting surface to prevent rust?

A: No. Any paint, coating, or thick anti-seize on the mounting surface changes the clamping distance and can cause the hub to sit at a slight angle. This introduces runout and will destroy the bearing prematurely. Only use a bare, clean metal surface.

Q2: What is "bearing endplay" and how much is acceptable?

A: Endplay is the amount of axial movement in the bearing. A new sealed hub assembly should have virtually zero measurable endplay. If you can feel or measure any movement by pushing and pulling the hub by hand, the unit is defective.

Q3: Can a hub failure cause my automatic parking brake to stop working?

A: On vehicles with electronic parking brakes, yes. The EPB module uses wheel speed data to determine when the vehicle is fully stopped before engaging. Erratic speed signals from a bad bearing can prevent the system from activating or releasing properly.
