Q1: Why does excessive preload destroy a hub bearing quickly? 

A: Excessive preload removes working clearance, causes rapid temperature rise, and degrades grease, which leads to early spalling. It also increases the force on the rollers and harms both lubricant and rollers.

Q2: Why does too much clearance cause high-speed wobble and distorted wheel-speed signals? 

A: Large clearance reduces wheel-end rigidity, creating radial play that can trigger high-speed vibration and wheel-speed signal distortion. In extreme cases rollers can skew or leave the cage, which may lead to bearing failure or even a lost wheel.

Q3: Why should an impact wrench not be used when setting preload? 

A: Proper run-down usually requires turning the hub five to twenty revolutions while tightening the axle nut to the specified value so the rollers seat correctly. Skipping this can create indentations in the raceway that later spall.
