A: The axle nut sets the bearing preload. Too loose and the bearing develops play and noise; too tight and it overheats and wears prematurely. Impact wrenches cannot control torque accurately, so a torque wrench and the manufacturer’s specification are required.

Q2: Why should wheel lug nuts be tightened in a star or diagonal pattern? 

A: Tightening in sequence ensures the hub seats evenly against the knuckle or brake rotor hat. Tightening in a circle can pull the hub off-center, causing runout, vibration, and uneven bolt loading.

Q3: Why must the hub mounting surface be cleaned before installation? 

A: Rust, dirt, or old gasket material between the hub and knuckle creates uneven seating. Even a small gap can cause hub runout, bearing preload change, bolt loosening, and premature failure.
